Thank you for choosing Tanium.  The following Release Notes document changes between releases of the TanOS software for the Tanium Appliance.

TanOS 1.5.6.0083

General Availability Release Date: March 3, 2020

Major Features

  • Tanium Core Platform 7.4.2.2036 and Tanium Core Platform 7.3.314.4269 are available from the Tanium Installation menu.

Known Issues and Workarounds

  • If LACP is enabled on the switch that is connected to the Tanium Appliance, the network interface remains down after the initial configuration. Initial configuration does not yet support NIC team configuration. To avoid this issue, disable LACP from the switch until you can work with your TAM to enable NIC teaming.

Upgrade Considerations

  • Minimum TanOS to upgrade from: TanOS 1.3.4 (See https://docs.tanium.com/appliance/appliance/upgrade.html for details on supported upgrade paths).
  • Customers with a clustered appliance (two Tanium Server appliances with clustered Tanium Server and database) should upgrade the appliance hosting the primary database first.


TanOS 1.5.6.0082

General Availability Release Date: February 25, 2020

Major Features

  • Automated off-box backups can now be scheduled for Full, Minimal, and Tanium Server Database backups.
  • Tanium Core Platform 7.4.2.2033 is available from the Tanium Installation menu.

Improvements

  • Health Check no longer reports a failure when no clients report to Tanium Server; this is handled through the Tanium Console.
  • Health Check: External DNS checks are not performed when Airgap configuration is enabled.
  • Updated the BIOS firmware for R430-based appliances.
  • Removed the option to download the Tanium KeyUtility tool from TanOS. The KeyUtility tool is available from your TAM.
  • Reduced user intervention when entering and exiting maintenance mode.
  • Resolved miscellaneous security issues.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed TanOS log files from showing an error if the log file does not yet exist.
  • Deleting a TanOS log no longer causes a pause in log recording.
  • Added tanium-init.dat MD5 to the About this Appliance menu.
  • The tanadmin account is no longer locked out from the physical or hypervisor console.
  • The ifcfg file is now created at the time of interface configuration.
  • Import Existing Keys is no longer available for Tanium Server 7.4 installations.
  • Resolved issue with special characters used in the password for the tanium account.

Major Features

  • Introduced support for Tanium Core Platform 7.4.1.1939.
  • Tanium Core Platform 7.3.314.4250 is available from the Tanium Installation menu.
  • All external backups are now encrypted. An encryption key must be added from the Backup/Restore menu.
  • Support for NIC firmware upgrades.
  • The Tanium Appliance no longer responds to LLDP requests if the latest NIC firmware is installed. This prevents Cisco DCBX from disabling the Tanium Appliance NIC ports.
  • Support for Direct Connect zone proxy.

Improvements

  • Reinitialize Replication now rejoins a Tanium Server to a cluster after a failover. It is no longer necessary or recommended to reconfigure the cluster after a failover.
  • Removed the Reinitialize Replication option from the Database Operations menu. You can still find this option under Tanium Operations > Configure Cluster.
  • Changes to support Tanium Core Platform 7.4:
    • Ability to import public keys to Tanium Zone Server through the tanium-init.dat file.
    • Zone server configuration now supported through the Tanium Console.
    • Added the zone server registration fingerprint to the About this Appliance menu.
  • Capability to uninstall the Tanium Zone Server Hub.
  • Health Check now monitors available memory instead of free memory.
  • Updated BIOS, PERC and NIC firmwares.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed issue with upgrade removing old kernel needed by the alternate partition.
  • Fixed issue with grub.cfg update during TanOS upgrade.
  • Fixed issue that could fill up the /boot directory after multiple upgrades.
  • Fixed potential issue rolling back to 1.4 from 1.5.x.
  • Addressed issue with Tanium Module Server sync when Trace and Trace Zone Proxy are installed.
  • Default Expired Passwords Effect is now set to Change Password.
  • Allow a NIC team to be taken UP or DOWN from the TanOS menus.
  • Fixed issue deleting a NIC team.
  • Fixed issue with deleted routing table entry returning after restarting network service.
  • Resolved error when setting Tanium Global Settings during upgrade from 1.4.x or earlier.
  • Fixed issue when setting virtual NICs to DHCP (not recommended for production environments).
  • Fixed issue with network restart failure on a virtual appliance.
  • Fixed issue that prevented an IP address change on a virtual appliance.
  • Fixed IP address input validation when changing an IP address.
  • Fixed issue with the SQL Connection string dropping IP address during a network configuration change.
  • Fixed truncated module names in the Module Log File Access menu.

Known Issues and Workarounds

  • Avoid performing a clean install of platform 7.3.314.3424 on TanOS 1.5.1.0060
  • Upgrade from TanOS 1.4.0 will terminate with a reboot, without warning. Upgrade for 1.3.4 will pause before reboot.

Upgrade Considerations

  • Customers can upgrade from either TanOS 1.3.4, TanOS 1.4.0 or TanOS 1.5.0. It is required to upgrade to at least TanOS v1.3.4 prior to upgrading to TanOS v1.5.x. Please see http://docs.tanium.com for details on supported upgrade paths
  • TanOS 1.5.x introduces Postgres SSL communication. Therefore, during upgrade, postgres services should NOT be stopped, and postgres MUST be running during upgrade. Customers using a clustered appliance (2 Tanium Server appliances with clustered Tanium Server and database) should upgrade the appliance hosting the primary database first
  • When upgrading a clustered Tanium Server instance, it is required for the tanadmin users public key from the primary cluster member, to be added to the tancopy users authorized keys on the secondary cluster member appliance.
  • When upgrading a clustered Tanium Server instance, it is highly recommended to check database cluster status, to ensure functionality, prior to upgrade.
  • It is highly recommended to configure the tanremote iDrac user and verify virtual console access before performing upgrade
  • Before upgrade, change your TanOS user (tanadmin role) password, else TanOS upgrade could expire your account and fail upgrade. Also review the TanOS Password Policy post upgrade, as new policies have been added.
  • Be sure you know the default tanadmin user’s password before upgrade.
  • If upgrading from an appliance with no role installed (Tanium Server, Tanium Module Server, etc), install the role prior to TanOS upgrade.

TanOS 1.5.0

General Availability Release Date: June 4, 2019

Major Features and Improvements

  • Added a new Tanium End User License Agreement, which users will need to read and accept after upgrade
  • Added official Virtual Appliance support for Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisor
  • Includes Tanium platform version 7.3.314.3668
  • Added operating system and database compliance requirements for deployment to Federal government networks
  • Archiving to the tanium_archive db will be automatically disabled on upgrade to 1.5.0
  • Enhanced the TanOS Health Check with numerous additional checks
  • Modified firewall management of Tanium platform ports, so ports are only opened when the owning service is started
  • Improved workflows for managing LDAPS and Zone Server TLS certificates
  • Improved Maintenance Mode, so that it can be enabled from within the activity that requires it
  • Added TanOS Activation status and failure reasons, along with other improvements, to the TanOS About page
  • Improved air gap content management. Customers can now ingest individual solution bundles or the entire air gap RPM within TanOS
  • Updated OS and firmware packages to latest available

Known Issues and Workarounds

  • Avoid performing a clean install of platform 7.3.314.3424 on TanOS 1.5.0
  • Upgrade from TanOS 1.4.0 will terminate with a reboot, without warning. Upgrade for 1.3.4 will pause before reboot.
  • Factory reset can leave the system in an unusable state. It is not recommended to perform Factory reset on a TanOS 1.5.0 appliance. If a factory reset is needed, please contact your TAM
  • TanOS 1.5.0 removes the capability to create and execute custom database queries
  • Removed Tanium Platform ANalyzer (TPAN) execution from within TanOS. Tanium Health Check module is the preferred method of running TPAN.

  • Customers can upgrade from either TanOS 1.3.4 or TanOS 1.4.0. It is required to upgrade to at least TanOS v1.3.4 prior to upgrading to TanOS v1.5.0. Please see http://docs.tanium.com for details on supported upgrade paths
