TanOS 1.4.0

Limited Availability Release Date: December 21, 2018
General Availability Release Date: January 8, 2019
End of Life Date: June 30, 2024

Major Features and Improvements

  • Includes Tanium platform version 7.3.314.3424
  • Added feature Maintenance Mode, which is required to perform backup, upgrade, reboot etc operations, to prevent multiple TanOS users from trying to perform these operations concurrently.
  • Improved TanOS Upgrader to provide a visual progress indicator, as well as to resume upgrade from the step in which it was interrupted, if interruption occurs.
  • Added feature Flexible Menu Search to provide users an easier way to navigate the TanOS menu system, including keyword shortcuts to jump straight to specific menus.
  • Enabled always on read-only shell access for all users, to enable more rapid troubleshooting.
  • Added TanOS menus to manage password policy values.
  • Added ability to update iDRAC and PERC firmware, in addition to including the latest available OEM BIOS firmware.
  • Added capability to configure Tanium Zone Server TLS, LDAPS certificate for LDAP Sync platform feature, manage vendor CA certs, platform HTML Banner and advanced TaniumDownloader commands via TanOS menus
  • Improved Tanium platform configuration editor menus.
  • Improved Tanium Module Server sync feature to allow scheduling sync (which requires service stop) during approved maintenance windows of customers choosing
  • Resolved issues with Active Partition Change that could leave an Appliance in an unhealthy state.

Known Issues and Workarounds

  • Factory Resets and Full Backups should be performed as the default tanadmin user only, to avoid issues that could result in those activities failing to complete.
  • Before managing a NIC Team, you must engage an Tanium Appliance SME as there are known issues with NIC Teaming in this release.
  • There is a known issue with Partition Sync on TanOS versions less than 1.3.3. For this reason, we do not recommend performing Partition Sync on any instance that has been running for more than a few weeks, until AFTER upgrade to at least TanOS 1.3.3, and even then, run Partition Sync as a separate step (menu B-1), rather than running the backup step as part of TanOS Upgrade.
  • When upgrading to TanOS 1.4.0, if Tanium Module Server (TMS) Sync is enabled, it will be disabled to ensure the user reconfigures TMS Sync to run during an approved maintenance window and interval of their choosing
  • For all new TanOS 1.4.0 installs or upgrades, it is strongly recommended to export grub and raid (if using physical appliance) security keys from each appliance, and store in a safe location.
  • In the event the primary database server goes down, database failover will promote the secondary to primary, but can leave the original primary database in a state unrecoverable through TanOS menus. Consult your TAM for guidance if you need to fail back to the original primary database server.

Upgrade Recommendations

  • Customers can upgrade from any TanOS v1.3.x. It is not required to upgrade to TanOS v1.3.4 prior to upgrading to TanOS v1.4.0. Please see http://docs.tanium.com for details on supported upgrade paths.
  • It is highly recommended to configure the tanremote iDrac user and verify virtual console access before performing upgrade.
