Special Notes

Security Updates

  • N/A.

New Features

  • Implements the new and improved file chunking downloads in the Tanium Client, allowing for CDN usage globally.
  • Implements a new reserved Action Status sensor in the Tanium Client which reports the status of the action ID provided as a parameter.
  • Tanium Clients now exchange messages when connecting to peers to ensure they support compatible versions of the Tanium protocol.
  • Adds support for ZIP file splitting and recombination to the TaniumExtractor command line utility.
  • The Tanium Client now sends a peer compatibility version message when registering with a server, to inform the server about other client versions it can peer with.
  • Adds new metrics to the Tanium Client to reflect download activity from peers, CDN, or server chunks.
  • Modifies the Tanium Client metrics for CDN configuration requests to use labels instead of using different metric names, making them easier to query.
  • Refactors the organization of the file chunk cache to accommodate new download types with variable chunk sizes.
  • The Tanium Client on macOS now provides a way to wait for processes in a group to finish before forcibly killing them.
  • The Tanium Client downloads API deprecates the use of download identifiers as a means of requesting a file.

Improvements

  • The Tanium Client now keeps downloaded files when linear chain peers request chunks from those files. By default, a file is kept until no peers request chunks of it over a period of five minutes, or until a low disk storage condition is detected.
  • Ensures that the initialization file provided to the Tanium Client pki reset command is moved into the TC/Backup/ directory with the name: tanium-init.dat.
  • The Tanium Client now logs information about the server certificate received when this connection fails. This helps with troubleshooting when encountering man-in-the-middle network devices.
  • The Tanium Client includes in its sensor history log the penalty delay incurred after a sensor's execution when these delays are enabled.
  • The Tanium Client on Windows now raises events in the event log when it is installed and uninstalled.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixes an issue in the disconnection of mailbox requests in Tanium Client extensions which would cause subsequent requests and responses to be mismatched, returning unexpected results.
  • Fixes an issue observed in some Windows Tanium Clients where they would not have the necessary CA certificates to connect and download from CDN.
  • Fixes an issue in the Tanium Client "test registration" command which would result in an "SSL_read: unexpected EOF" error when the test was executed using a pki.db file instead of a tanium-init.dat.
  • Fixes an issue in the handling of Tanium components pki.db databases which could result in the error: "Failed to add message signing certificate: Key already exists with fingerprint".
  • Modifies the internals of the Tanium Client to track downloads by file hash instead of their package file ID, since different package files can have the same hash which can cause processing problems.
