TanOS 1.3.0
Limited Availability Release Date: May 24, 2018
General Availability Release Date: May 24, 2018
End of Life Date: June 30, 2024
Major Features and Improvements
- This is the first TanOS release to support the new Tanium Appliance version 2 hardware. TanOS 1.3.0 is supported on all version 1 and version 2 Tanium Appliances.
- New menu (for version 2 Tanium Appliance hardware only) to export the default RAID security key. This is the key that resides on the RAID controller to encrypt the virtual disks in the system. Without this key, recovery of data from a RAID controller failure is impossible. It is highly recommended that customers export this key (it will be encrypted on export), and store it in a safe location.
- This upgrade will overwrite the existing iDRAC user configuration, removing all existing users, so that TanOS can leverage the iDrac features and manage the iDrac Virtual Console from within TanOS. A new user ("tanremote”), an iDrac only user, will be created in the iDrac upon upgrade. The iDrac IP will not be modified upon upgrade, but customers will now be able to configure the iDrac IP address and tanremote user within TanOS.
- TanOS supports 2 roles (tanadmin and tanuser), so you can now create multiple users within these roles to administer or monitor TanOS.
- TanOS 1.3.0 Virtual Appliance is now Generally Available for pre-production environments. This product is free of charge for Tanium Core customers that also own Tanium Appliance hardware. We request existing Tanium Appliance customers use this Tanium Virtual Appliance release in their pre-production environments only at this time. Please see your TAM for download.
- Moved database monitoring and replication menus under a consolidated Database Operations menu, and introduced troubleshooting activities (database query and config file viewing and export) from within TanOS.
- This release includes the latest version 7.2.314.3019 and 7.2.314.3201 Tanium platform installers.
- Improvements to Activation Key menus, including multiple levels of command shell access (ReadOnly, ReadWrite and Full Shell)
- Improved NIC Teaming and multi-NIC routing support.
- Customers can now configure Syslog and/or Email Alerting from TanOS.
- Includes updates to the OEM BIOS released in January to mitigate the Meltdown/Spectre vulnerabilities. BIOS fixes must be installed from the Appliance Maintenance > Advanced menu in TanOS. It can take up to 30 minutes to complete the BIOS update on the largest appliances due to the reboots necessary. We recommend enabling the iDrac Virtual Console via TanOS, or enabling some other KVM-type remote access solution, prior to performing the BIOS update.
- Fixed issues where account lockouts occurred before the configured failed login limits, and would not auto-unlock based on configured settings.
- Includes updates to numerous operating system packages
- Numerous other shell improvements
Known Issues and Workarounds
- This build resolves an issue where password expiration may not have been enforced on previous releases. Due to this, the first TanOS login post-upgrade may require password reset.
- Upgrading platform from 7.1 to 7.2 builds on TanOS 1.3.0 may require creating required TLS certs after upgrade via menu, followed by starting the Tanium Server service.
Upgrade Recommendations
- Customers can upgrade from either TanOS v1.2.0 or 1.2.1 to this release.
- This upgrade WILL remove existing users from the iDrac interface! Please enable the tanremote user and change its password following upgrade to recover Virtual Console access.
- Perform a partition sync prior to launching the TanOS Upgrade menu, so that you can confirm the partition sync succeeds before upgrading TanOS.
- This upgrade is much larger than previous upgrades, please give ample time to sync partitions and perform the upgrade.
